Surat city is known as Diamond City And Silk City because of large scale Dimond cutting and Manufacturing.It is believed that about 92% or 8 out of 12 Diamonds are cut amd polished in Surat.
Though silk and chemicals, which has also contributed in thriving business of Surat but the city is mailny known for its Diamond industry and Textile industry. It would be not an exaggration if we say that it is the heart of India’s booming diamond-polishing industry.Surat Dimond industry ,according to one figure,in 2005 cut more than 92% of the world’s diamond pieces. And the Surat Diamond industries earned about $8 billion in exports of Diamond. Surat Diamond history dates back to 1091 when emigrating Gujarati Diamond cutters from Soutth east africa established the industries and by 1970 they started first time Diamond exporting.And since then Surat Diamond Industry has never looked back and now the industry is known all over the world.So far mainly polishing work takes place on small weight stones but surat Dimond workshops have made thei target to achieve the lucrative market for finishing larger, pricier stones in the future.
